So my neighbour has finally gone into labour.
I really can’t wait to have a screaming baby next door. Constant sleep disruption is really going to help the final year of my PhD come along. My Mum gave Ryan a whole load of sound proofing. I think our bedroom might end up taking on a whole new look.

When I was a teenager I didn’t really make zines (well, I made one, about mullets), instead I made a motherfucking website. A motherfucking website with my friend Emily. We thought we were hilarious, and we were right. In hindsight, what we created was perhaps the most postmodern of all websites. Years ahead of our time. Anyway, here it is. Pioneers.

The Rape of Men - Will Storr, The Observer -... →
Men aren’t simply raped, they are forced to penetrate holes in banana trees that run with acidic sap, to sit with their genitals over a fire, to drag rocks tied to their penis, to give oral sex to queues of soldiers, to be penetrated with screwdrivers and sticks. Atim has now seen so many male survivors that, frequently, she can spot them the moment they sit down. “They tend to lean...

Russell Brand on Amy Winehouse: 'We have lost a... →
Now Amy Winehouse is dead, like many others whose unnecessary deaths have been retrospectively romanticised, at 27 years old. Whether this tragedy was preventable or not is now irrelevant. It is not preventable today. We have lost a beautiful and talented woman to this disease. Not all addicts have Amy’s incredible talent. Or Kurt’s or Jimi’s or Janis’s. Some people just...

Thoughts on my PhD of the day:
Having to use language as a means to describe how language arbitrarily constructs gender is both frustrating and contradictory.

Everything makes me want to cry today.
Man shouts at me and Ryan in the street. Have a little cry. Almost slip over because my Toms can’t handle the wet. Want to have cry. Japan score a goal. Want to have cry.

Interesting article on the problematic portrayal of female characters in Disney and why Studio Ghibli offers a more progressive approach in comparison.

¡Voy a España en el mañana!
We’re in the countryside for four days and then off to Barcelona. Totally cut off from the internet. Will I have the guts to speak Spanish? Only time will tell!  Hasta luego!

I've been listening to the audiobook of Bossypants...
Mostly because I never wanted it to end. I wanted Tina to be there to make me laugh and make me feel like a human being on demand. I can’t imagine how many times people have passed me on the street on my way to uni while I’ve been poorly stifling laughter with tears running down my face. Unfortunately though I couldn’t stretch it out long enough and like all of the best things in...
