Helen Gurley Brown died.
I have such an unusual relationship with HGB. The first ‘feminist’ paper I ever wrote was for my American studies class and I opted to analyse HGB’s Sex and the Single Girl. I remember my tutor writing that my account was ‘utterly chilling’ and that’s kind of how I felt when I was reading her book. It was the first time that I realised that not all women’s liberation was indeed liberating. Is it even possible to have a postfeminist text released in 1962? Unusual relationship indeed.
But here’s to Helen Gurley Brown, the woman who gave us this diet,
Breakfast - 1 egg, any style. One glass white wine.
Lunch - 2 eggs, any style. Two glases white wine.
Dinner - 1 steak. Finish the bottle of white wine.
and who wrote “Remember, frigidity isn’t a physical disability. It’s a curable state of mind”.
I would toast to her, but I’ve run out of wine.
